7th one of 2008...

Jah Tubbys, King Shiloh and Aba Shanti I

Shiloh, what is up with all that low mid in your low end, its too much, it sounds dirrty, I can't hack it, scoop it out or something, it can't go on! Again I was exhausted, up at the crack of dawn grrr. Too much digi dub for me, after one too many four to the floor tracks in a row I made a move for my bed. Should have had a nap rather than a couple of after work drinks, damn!

6th one of 2008...

Entebee, Channel One and Aba

So I missed the last one. V annoying but i was in Sweden so couldn't be helped. Anyway I was extra keen to make the most of this one as a result. But my work organised some drinks to welcome me to the company, and my housemate woke me up in the middle of the night partying so I was not in great shape. But I stuck it out! Skanking zombie style.

Great to see some many friends down there, especially Rich, from a sound engineering point as well, saw him last night, he talked about his nostrils vibrating!

Highlights for me were hearing Aba playing Bunny Wailer Rise And Shine, down in the valley or whatever its called. And to hear that tune that goes "the foolish man built his house on the sand and it came tumbling down.... won't be jammin no more etc" Love it!

Its a week to the next one, I'm anticipating major skankage!!

4th one of 2008 with...

Channel One, Jah Youth & Aba-Shanti-I

Spent almost all of the night in the other room chatting to my new friend Jasmine. Most sorry to have missed Jah Youth. Good to meet fellow dub fan Kris - big up!

Great to hear Creation Rebel faster remix thing dropped by Channel One, brought a smile to my face and got me grooving early on. Interesting to hear Aba play some quite forward thinking track, like to hear this kinda stuff.

Third one of 2008 - Channel One, King Shiloh & Aba-Shanti-I

Couldn't stay too long at this one as had to work like crazy the next day but my main comment is: King Shiloh, sound system! Wahgwarrn? Something was WRONG. Some weird resonance in the low mids... sub bass synth turned up too high? On one tune it sounded so wrong it was right, properly dirrrty, but the rest of the time I basically couldn't listen. Not usually like that, hope its not the shape of things to come? I wonder if its the new lay-out of the speakers? One stack caught in a room node?

Nice pretty girls, bare hats (!), good vibes.

Lookng forward to Jah Youth and Channel One next time!!!

Second one of 2008. March 7th. With Jah Tubbys, Entebbe and Aba-Shanti-I.

My first stint on the dancefloor, nice and early, about 11:45ish was great, three great sets from the three sounds, went on there a bit stiff and came off all loosened up with a big smile on my face. As it should be. Aba was on top form all night as far as I could see, at one point Polly (nice to meet you) was like "you just can't follow that!", and she was right! Entebbe and Tubbys despite moments of genius weren't really doing it for me for the rest of the night, and there was a very flat hour or so around 3:30 (i think) where i was getting disheartened. Dull digidub, nondescript blines, drums too quiet in the mix, just uninspiring music that I couldn't move to at all, for like an hour! I still rate these sounds, especially Tubbys who I've seen countless times, and Entebbe brought me alive at the start, and I loved seeing them bopping behind their station, the shadows of rasta hats, and flailing arms on the back wall. I think Aba was aware the shortfall in energy by the other sounds because a couple of times he'd come in on the mic before being invited to "come thru" by the previous sound... to keep the momentum up i guess. And boy did he! He can carry the weight! The highlight of the night for me was an old tune, and its dub mix on the flip, with a wicked organ lick, slightly ska-ish, got me shaking, the refrain was 'prophecy must be fulfilled' i think, i need to know what it is! The dub mix had the little intro then the first line of words by itself and then into the instrumental. Bad! I think every tune he played rocked it that night.

I think it was Entebbe that played a tune with the lyrics "why should we vote in their elections, when they don't represent us" that I felt slightly uneasy about, seemed a bit negative. Got a point of course but just didn't feel like it was doing anyone any good. As always I'm massively uneloquent writing this hungover on a sunday, drinking was kept to a minimum at the dance which was good.

The girls. A girl with a red headscarf thing intertwined in her (blond) hair has the most amazing moves, so much control, eratic bursts of counterpoint motion, proper feeling it! Somewhere between a ballerina and a voodoo priestess. Was a joy to behold. Her motion was like music itself, and glimpsing her outline (who am i kidding? staring with jaw on the floor!!) always gave me a little rhythmic element to follow and converse with. And the girl with the brown hair who I was making eyes with and I let slip thru my fingers (walked a away holding her disappointed gaze like a fool), I'm sorry, you seemed really cool.

Anyway! Sooooooooo looking forward to the next one - Mikey Dread! Who I have been reading about in the excellent Bass Culture, a reggae history. A friend and disciple of the heroic King Tubby - SICK!! : ) And Channel One are the month after that as well which is a bit strange, but gOOd... they're along side Jah Youth who I don't remember seeing before (but i think i have) so I'm also looking forward to that one too!! DAMN! Just realised that I will have to miss the 27th June one coz I'll be in Stockholme!! Could be worse!

Wow, just remembered seeing that security guy who has really harsh to everyone about checking coats in at The Rec.

First one of 2008, 1st of Feb: King Shiloh, Iration Steppas & Aba Shanti I

My first one at the new venue (i was out the country for the other one or two they've had there) and University of Dub is alive and kicking! Really great to see it so healthy - oh ye of little faith! (IE me!) It was essentially full to capacity, never really an ideal state of affairs but hey, i wouldn't have wanted it any other way.

Sadly i think i spent way too much time on the night going to and from the toilet / bar / cloakroom / 'where's my mate gone?'. Next time I'm gunna zone-out in the far end and not move. I get the feeling Iration smacked it but i seemed to be away from the dance floor for most them. I guess after hearing Aba's set at about midnight my thirst was quenched - classic Aba business, getting the crowd bubbling HARD to lyrics and melody and just all-round good feelings, smiles all around, without much in the way of b-line or fx etc. Ahhhhh, I thought, I've missed this. : ) Perfection! That and for me, it was more than anything about just being there, and i think i got caught in the excitement of the roaring success of it all.

Always good to hear 'Door Peeper', and nice to hear Aba dedicate it to the elder that first brought him into contact with Rastafari and presumably set him on the trajectory that brought UOD to life - a hero. My mate Larry was like: 'great lyrics, door peeper: 'you're either in or your out' - I'd never looked at it like that but yeah. Great to see Shiloh, its been too long. And the Iration system really is a thing of wonder as always.

Went with more people than ever before and that was great.

Right I'll leave it there as I'm not writing too entertainingly.

Next one 7th of March, can't wait!!!

Long time.  Merry xmas and a happy new year.  Been in China since the last post.  Looking forward to checking out the new venue (SE One) Feb 1: Aba, Iration & King Shiloh!!

The last ever University of Dub at The Brixton Recreation Center, an emotional night!

Entebbe Sound System, King Earthquake and Aba Shanti I in attendance. In general, if i'm being honest i thought that, musically, it was a tiny bit bellow par - but that's a general comment, all systems performed solidly - and i was jumping around like a crazed loon on at least three or four occasions, so probably more a comment on the general high standard that has been set?

My musical highlights, were Aba's last slot (more on that later!), hearing Burning Spear's Travelling (Earthquake i think) very eary on followed closely by Legalise It by Peter Tosh and the dub version (!) from Entebbe - big tunes! The baseline from Legalise It is dirrrty, a solid wall of low end from the low lows up, with loads of 400-600ish cycles in there, so tons of grit driving and driving away... and driving - loved it! Also from Entebbe, the tune that goes Jah Give Us The Victory is... I'm lost for words... just amazing. Big up the differently abled badman who turned on his flashing lights for this one! Entebbe again at about 3am i think came out with two or three 1970's super-minimal drum and bassline rockers in a row - tunes with groove for days - i was trapped between a hypnotic out of body state and wide eyed rapture of awe for the pure genius of the b-lines. So first time i've seen Entebbe, and impressed, would say they need to work on getting those mic levels up a touch, and don't be affraid to give so of the older tunes a little top-end when they need it. Trying to be brief: suffice to say Aba and Earthquake - big selection - jumping around like crazy. Both played personal anthems - "King Earthquaaaaake!" - "Aba the father, Shanti the warrior!". I remember Aba smacking it so hard, practcially the whole crowd had to go for a sit-down, left the room, poor Entebbe (who had to follow) - was comedy checking Mark Iration and some dreads chatting just outside the main hall being like "what's going on? ...its an exodus?!?!" : ) And oh yeah, definite highlight was Earthquake feeding back his bass into his bass (that's what it sounded like), i've literally heard nothing like it, uncontrollably building and building, feeding back out of control - i swear the crowd stopped what it was doing and stood paralysed in fear looking at Earthquake (who low end is all powerful as standard) as if to say "what are you doing man, can't you see that its feeding back, quick do something, act, you're gunna kill us alllllllllllll" - we were looking to see if something was going wrong, and then just at the last moment he switched it hard off, and looked up and grinned his head off - he knew exactly what he was doing, silence - "come thru Aba". Brilliant.

So yeah the crowd and the vibes: Great to see Mark Iration milling about, paying respects, doing the rounds, and generally having it! Crowd slightly low in numbers, presumably coz the last UOD was two weeks ago (this one was brought forward coz of the refurbishment of the rec) and the fact that it was to be the last one at the rec ever was not widely publised - not sure why - i'm sure if it had been widely advertised it would have been crazily rammed so maybe better this way. The crowd was totally diverse as always, it seemed to me the Krusty crew was almost totally missing (two in a month to much for them?) and maybe a few of the young clubby types were under represented. Also: Loads of hot and interesting looking girls, loads man. So many familar faces i wanted to exchange words with, not to mention the staff, the door staff, security, venors, cloakroom crew etc. etc. to thank them for the their role (whether they knew it or not) in what has been an important and positive part of my life - when i put it like that i totally regret not doing so!! Anyway you lot are wicked... you knew that anyway. Thanks to the door staff in particular for looking after my friend Katy who had to leave early (with a stomache bug), checking she was getting home ok, thanks. Gotta say hope the new incarnation of the University of Dub has as good wheelchair facilities, that's gotta happen one way or the other.

So yeah, the last one. When i saw all the posters around the place for nights gone by i knew it was farewell. Nice touch tho'. Aba gave a great speach at around 2am i think, annoucing the news, upbeat, postitive of course, and i wonder if a tiny part of him is ever so slightly relieved - he's earned a break! 11 years he said the night had been running, and he's missed two dances! "I make that 98%" he said proudly.

Looking back i've probably been attending, on and off, for almost ten years. I remember the first one i went to, taken there by a friend, Mark Hedicar, when i was probably 18, we got there very early, i think we might have even just walked in the side door, and maybe not paid, (hi Mark), i sort of rememer entering the hall from that side and sitting on the floor, and i think possibly even leaving before the lights were turned out, maybe one of the sounds was running late that night, maybe its was getting past our bedtimes? Anyway, that was the first. But it had all started with Mark giving me a copy of one of Aba's tapes, or at least it said Aba Shanti I on it, and that tape was to do the rounds and be copied several times, many times it was lost and someone would have to get back in touch with someone to get a copy. It was great to copy it for the man who had given it to me in the first place, that was about two years ago, he was very happy to be reunited with it and i was happy to return the favour, and complete the circle. Recently, I had lost my second copy, thought Jo had the only remaining copy in knew of, but he said he'd lost his (and wanted another one!) - oh dear. But happy days, after battling through eons of dust in my attic the other day, there it was, the original! Pity i don't have a tape player any more! : ) Spotted one at work with a digital out that i might try and use and make a master version. Later on that year and subsequent years i'd go there with a mate Ben Ashton and his crew, including our mutual mate Rob and another Ben, I remember seeing Aba at The Fridge in Brixton with them. The way i remember it was Ben Ashton and two of his boys in a row, hands behind back, bobbing back and forth in sync... literally all night like that! Hope they're alright these days. And it was always there. Anywaaaay, i have digressed.

After the 2am ish announcement the party continued through the night, the knees and the back particularly were weak : ) but the skanking continued. At one point i started to worry i'd have to sit out the last stint, i think Chris went off for a rest at this point, but then Earthquake came through with the bangers, had me and Jo, and certainly those around us, jumping around like mad, and knew there were hidden reserves of energy, always, waiting to be tapped.
And so it continued until 6am. It seemed Aba's father was in attendance to witness the last dance, lots of smiling, he looked cool, apparently Chris reckoned he may have spotted Aba's mum too. The way the rotations went, 6am was approaching and it looked like it would not come back to Aba in time to do a last set! At about 2 minutes past 6am, Earthquake finished... and the lights turned on... and Aba began. What a moment. The hall felt still half full, people of all races and ages and religions, lots of familiar faces and we danced and appreciated, regardless of the lights being on, instrumental heavy weight stuff, not vocal weepies as i had expected, it could be read as definace but i think it was fun and upful buisness, Aba not holding back with the dubs, long feedbacks on the delays, flicking them off, then slamming in the bass uncharacteristically brutally, pushing his system to breaking point, the warmth man! A bit of dub-drum fx that took me back to the old tape. Two sirens put through their paces. But mainly it was about being there at the end to see loads of people dancing unashamedly with the lights bright on, surrouded by the flags of the world, under the banner of peace and UOD. My feet were more off the floor than on, guys utilising huge strips of dancefloor, legs going everywhere, one guy moving like his body was limp and violently animated by bass alone, my man Jo doing 360's in the air, sick sick sick sick, such strong outward emotions on display.

Before the very end Aba again reminded us that if it was up to him the night would go on and on and on, and that the vibe in this hall would last and last regardless, check the website, and when one door close another door open. Its been an honour sir. Thank you.

This night has brought people together, Aba told us, the crowd is diverse, and this is the foundation that will be built on in the future, what ever form it takes.

Big up Chris and Jo for being there til the end and very regularly sharing UOD experiences with me in recent times. Although it is sad that it has come to an end, at least we made the most of it before it was too late, and we went out in style, what more can you ask for? (Also very pleased to have Kate, Katy and Jamie's company on this one - big up for making it).

Right!

What's next?

Stay tuned.

One love

Events Update! The End of An Era.

Ok i think i got the wrong end of the stick, i reckon The Rec is closed for three months, might not be forever, but here's what i wrote when i thought, this friday's dance was deffo to be the last ever at the Rec, tee hee hee, enjoy:

After emailing New Flower Productions to complain about the new annoying bouncer (see last blog) it seems i was very kindly (cheekily) put on the mailing list. A happy addition to my inbox, good for forwarding to others etc. But tonight i found this unhappy news:

Events Update>>On 21st March 2007 Lambeth Council officially signed an agreement with the new administrators who will be managing the Brixton Recreation Centre. We have be told that the building will be closed from 1 April for approx. 3 months for refurbishment. Therefore, the Friday 30th March dance will on.>>Lambeth Council has told us, New Flower Promotions Ltd, that they will be looking to provide an alternative venue for our events. Until then we cannot proceed with our future planned dates. We hope to secure a venue a.s.a.p. to continue with Selassie I works.>>As soon as we have more information this will be put onto the website.>>One love.

Damn. Damn. Firstly let us hope that the night is able to continue in as potent a form as it has enjoyed at The Rec. Secondly, see if there is anything we can do to help this along. And thirdly, those that have had the luxury of walking to and from University of Dub, we might wonder if those days are over. So The Rec is going into private hands? It was a community centre, now the new format is incompatible with this lively focus of the Brixton West Indian Community? You'd have thought the new management would be interested in a slice of the profits, its not like they'll be doing much buisness at 4am on a friday, wonder what the story is there?

I for one will miss The Rec. The fact that it was a sports hall, community centre, helped give the night its unique vibe, it kept the focus on the community (togetherness, all ages, multi-racial) aspect, and freed it from the inherent seediness of night clubs. Accoustically, that hall is entirely unsuitable for all things (including sports if you ask me - i remember at school, teachers' voices constantly having to battle all the reverb, even in an empty hall, but especially if there was a little activity on the other side of the hall), its six sides of reflective building materials, parallel walls etc. A deplorable accoustic environment for everything... everything except dub... for which it is excellent! So lets hope it is another sports hall (near to my house), the same size or bigger, and it happens soon! Selassi I works must continue, to uplift the people. And the music must go on, for the sake of music itself.

Second one of 2007, the 9th of March, this time with the Word, Sound & Power system along side Jah Tubbys and Aba Shanti I. Having never seen WSP before (and being a fastidious audio engineer of the 'early is on time' school of thought) i was a little disappointed (and concerned) to see they were still setting up at 11:30 - lights on. I mean, i was really looking forward to checking them out, i had high expectations. But they soon enough got down to it, and it went off without a hitch, so respect to them. Not sure what the story was with the apparent lateness but i'm sure there's all manner of trials and tribulations to be overcome behind the scenes. Respect, WSP, great to hear/see you, good work!

Now. Now, now, now. What's with that new security guy?! The one forcing everyone to check their coats. He needs to learn some basic manners. I've been coming to UOD, on and off, for the best part of ten years and there's never been 'a you must check your coat' policy, in fact i think this must be a world first, what's going on? Furthermore, security has always been more than friendly at UOD, and that's an important part of the positive atmosphere, if only because they're the first thing your greeted with. Good promoters and good venues always have good security, standard. This guy was unpleasant. He would have been more at home turning out drunkards at some high street commercial meat market than at the temple of irie behaviour. I really can't understand where he fits in. I'm certain he had no conception of what The University of Dub is. But ha ha everytime i walked passed him he was having a nightmare, with a crowd of baffled people around him responding badly to his ugly vibe. Big up to the Sikh guy who said 'i've paid my money, there was no sign at the door, don't worry i'll probably take it off in a bit, end of'. Slightly less of a big up to the guy who said 'what makes you so important i have to listen to you?', and walked passed him, i swear the 'security' guy was ready to hit him. I could go on and on and on, it was almost funny by the end. Anyway enough on this fool, i've emailed UOD organisers my thoughts, really hoping he's not there next time.

Music. Aba smacked it. I was really feeling the stripped down joint out of Shanti studio with all the reverby djembes, intersting styles. But I spent most of the night in contemplative awe and appreciation of the way he uses his bass, gradually warming things up, turning up the pressure, making the body more and more supple....

...right, must now dash, and eat cake!

Sunday, February 04, 2007

First one of the year. Abashanti, King Earthquake and Iration Steppas. Perhaps coz its Feb not Jan there wasn't a sense of milestone-ness coming across from the djs like with the end of year 2006 dance. Buisness as usual, but with a sense of we'd all had a month off and missed it! The refurbishment of The Rec seems to have finished so we all entered thru the usual way which meant the corridor that looks into the dance wasn't illuminated... no eerie yellowish glow coming in from above, remember that? Anyway, really great wholesome vibe, good crowd, filled to capacity but zero aggieness, just like it should be. I only managed 11 til 3. I don't like not staying late but had major sleep to catch up on. Foam plugs, hearing damage negligible.

Who gives guidance?

Who gives guidance still?

Really good sets by all: Iration slightly less hard and minimal than the last time i saw them - good thing in my book, (tho' i'm sure many would differ on that). Bunny Wailer's Rise and Shine played pretty early on, the knees weren't warmed up but they had found themselves next to a guy with equal passion for this tune, lighter, blapblapblap, - did the trick. Love that track. Often the one i'm singing in the shower the next day. A nice warm set from Aba, inc. Dennis Brown tribute, which rocked it for me, also good revival biznis from Iration. Some beautiful meditative moments from Earthquake (anyone else remember seeing those boys dancing like mad infront of his station about 12:00?) plus mellowed words of wisdom. Big up and big thanks to all.

Wicked to bump into Silvi n Aleena + crew. James D, always a pleasure. Chris, you missed it - what were you thinking?! : )
